Fire Protection

Hot Work Permit Required for work that produces a spark or flame.

A fire watch must be assigned and used for all hot work activity producing a spark or flame. More than one fire watch may be required.

The fire watch must stay in place at least 30 minutes after hot work is complete. Some projects may require a fire watch for a longer period of time.
Fire Extinguishers When performing hot work, a fire extinguisher dedicated to that operation must be within 30 feet.

If you see a fire, report it to your supervisor immediately.

If comfortable, for small fires, use the PASS method to extinguish the fire. Stand back and PULL the pin, AIM low at the base of the fire, and SQUEEZE the handle. SWEEP side to side.

If you use a fire extinguisher or see one that has been discharged, report it to your supervisor so it can be replaced.
Combustibles Keep cardboard, paper, and other combustible materials away from heat sources.

Before performing any hot work, check to see if there is any combustible material in the area or below you. Keep combustible material away from hot work.
Flammable and Combustible Liquids Gasoline can only be stored in an approved metal safety can. The self-closing lid must function properly, and the flash screen at the throat of the
can must be installed and undamaged. Plastic gas cans are not allowed.

Do not refill gas cans in the back of truck beds. Place gas cans on the ground for refueling.

Store flammable liquids in cabinets rated for storage of combustibles.

Keep open flame, hot work and other heat sources at least 50 feet away from flammable and combustible liquids.

“DANGER: NO SMOKING” signs must be placed at flammable storage areas.

Dispose of rags with flammable or combustible liquids in approved containers.
