Hazard recognition is an essential skill that is required for every activity performed on a jobsite. Injuries are the result of some undesirable contact between a person and one or more sources of energy. Energy is required to lift, transport, assemble materials, and can be stored or transferred by hoists, cranes, equipment, and tools. Some materials possess stored energy that may be released in the act of performing work (e.g., excavation activities) known as stuff that can kill you or STCKY.
Use the Energy Wheel during the Safety Task Assignment (STA) to help identify STCKY hazards associated with each form of energy that were not apparent when developing the Activity Hazard Analysis. For example, a crew may use the mechanical icon to identify rotating machinery, tension in cables, and other hazards.
Each section of this Code of Safe Practices indicates potential STCKY hazards that should be evaluated during the STA to assist with hazard recognition. Prior to starting work, make sure all hazards and potential energy sources are identified, controlled, and safe conditions verified.
