Back and Lifting Safety

Before starting your day, think about the materials you will need to perform your tasks. If possible, have those materials moved by mechanical means rather than carrying them.

Manual LiftingPlan for in the Activity Hazard Analysis or Safety Task Assignment.

Do not lift any object over 50 pounds without help.

If the material is long or difficult to handle, do not move it alone.

Warm up and stretch before each shift and periodically throughout the day.

Plan your path of travel and verify it is safe and free from any tripping hazards, ice or other slippery
surfaces.

Use safe lifting procedures when picking up tools or material. Lift with your legs, not your back, keep your back in a natural, straight position, and avoid twisting.

Your hands must have a solid grasp of the object.

Be aware of your fingers when setting the load down to prevent a pinch-point injury.

Avoid lifting above shoulder height. When storing material, place heavier material on a table so you do not have to bend to pick it up.
Mechanical LiftingUse mechanical methods to lift and move material when possible.
